Type 2 Diabetes or (T2DM) is a condition where your blood sugar is raised, as your cells, which usually use sugar to function, become resistant to insulin - a hormone released by the pancreas, which helps to control your blood sugar levels. Prediabetes is a precursor to Type 2 Diabetes, meaning you are experiencing a degree of glucose intolerance, which if left untreated, will develop into Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes occurs due to an overload of our body's long-term energy storing systems and as mentioned above, starts with the development of Prediabetes. This causes our cells to become insulin resistant - they no longer take in glucose and so it remains in the blood.
There are existing treatments used to treat Type 2 Diabetes, mainly medication-based, which will treat the high blood sugar, but may not effectively treat the insulin resistance and the excess fat that is not allowing our cells to function properly. To treat and reverse Prediabetes, to prevent the development of Type 2 Diabetes, lifestyle measures such as diet changes and increases in physical activity are suggested. Please continue scrolling to find out more about which of the existing treatment and options are the most effective.
In terms of treating the root cause of Type 2 Diabetes, Insulin Resistance and Excess Fat, there are more effective methods than those that are predominantly used (medication), which involve losing the excess weight. Resulting in reversal of Type 2 Diabetes and, if you can keep the weight off, remission. Please scroll down to find out more information on the treatment options available and their effectiveness.
Very Low-Carbohydrate and Calorie Diets (VLCDs), such as the Cambridge Weight Plan, have been shown to be effective in causing acute weight and fat loss and thus, effective in reversing Type 2 Diabetes in a matter of months. Please click on the button below to learn more.
Very Low-Carbohydrate and Calorie Diets (VLCDs), such as the NHS Oviva programme, have been shown to be effective in causing acute weight and fat loss and thus, effective in reversing Type 2 Diabetes in a matter of months; however, the support is not as consistent as on the Cambridge. A self-imposed calorie deficit, can be effective in reversing Type 2 Diabetes, for the same reasons as VLCDs - this process will happen over a more prolonged period of time, but may be more sustainable for some patients. Please click below to find out more.
Commercial Diet Plans and Clubs are branded Diet Plans, sold by companies, such as Weight Watchers, Slimming World and Second Nature (to name a few). Their methods for losing weight are done by altering behaviour and eating patterns, done through various in-app strategies, which can be successful for some; however, some patients may not be as tech-savy or find these methods are suitable for them. Please click on the link below, where you can learn more about Commercial Diet Plans and Clubs.
Weight loss surgeries are offered by the NHS, for those who are considered morbidly obese (BMI 40+) and have exhausted all diet plans but with little success. Please click on the button below to find out more.
Medication-focused treatment, which only treats the high-blood sugar symptom and forces the body to produce more insulin, furthering insulin resistance. This approach has not been very successful in reversing Type 2 Diabetes and eventually, those who are on medication will end up on injected insulin.
The current treatment approach is akin to having a headache from a chest infection, but only taking paracetamol to treat the headache and not taking antibiotics to treat the cause of the headache.
