Frequently Asked Questions

If you are a patient at Tilehurst Village or Chancellor House Surgery then the treatment options listed on the website will be available to you through either surgery. If not, then please discuss this with your GP practice.

The text you’ve received is about the Diabetes: A Second Chance website. It’s been created by our H&W Coach and the website contains all the information you need to understand your Prediabetes or Type 2 Diabetes, including how to reverse them through fat loss.

The 'My Treatment Form', which can be found on the right hand side of the toolbar, next to “Treatment Options”. The form is there so we as a surgery can track what choice of treatment you would like to either continue or start on, after you’ve finished reading the information on the website.

Once you have filled out the form and submitted it, it will be sent to a secure NHS inbox and then you will be contacted by a member of staff from the surgery who will book you in with our health and well-being coach, if you’ve chosen one of the diet options.

The other two remaining options are Bariatric Surgery or Traditional Treatment (Medication).

Bariatric Surgery  - you will see a GP who will refer you for a suitability assessment with the hospital.

The eligibility criteria for Bariatric Surgery is:

  • BMI of 40+ or 35-40 w T2DM or High BP
  • Can show you’ve exhausted all other weight loss options such as changing dieting and exercise but struggle to either lose weight or keep it off.
  • You agree to long term follow ups such as maintaining healthy lifestyle changes
  • You are fit and health to undergo the surgery due to general anesthetic (involves losing considerable weight)
  • You’ve been receiving or will be receiving care from a specialist obesity team.

Waiting times are around 2 years and a very small percentage of patients are approved for Bariatric surgery.

If you would like to go on or continue with traditional treatment:

  • Medication only given to those who have Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM - HbA1c of 48 or higher), not to those who have Prediabetes.
  • This also involves monitoring, including yearly diabetes eye screening and medication reviews , along with blood tests to check your blood sugar.
